2002 WISANGER HILLS CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Colour

Deep dark red - quite dense and attractive - promising a full rich wine.
Nose
Lifted, leafy, berried, ripe cabernet aromas are complemented by gentle spice and vanillin oak.
Palate
The palate is medium to full bodied but with plenty of flavour in the middle palate. Flavours are ripe, with berries and cassis, and with a pleasant vanillin/spice component from the oak. The palate has elegance and an impressive length. Tannins are grainy and full, but softening all the time, and give a nice lean dryness to the finish..
Oak
French (90%) and American. 85% hogsheads and 15% barriques. All of the barrels had been once or twice used in keeping with the Wisanger Hills style. The wine was matured in these for about 22 months.
Aging Potential
This is a wine which drinks very nicely now, and it continues to get rounder and softer with time in the bottle. Flavour, body and tannin structure all indicate that the wine will improve further with age – at least until 2007. It will continue to live on well after that!.
Growing Season
2001/2002 was a very trying growing season. Spring was cold and wet and more importantly long. As a result, fruit set was poor and crops very low indeed. However, berry size was small and colour and flavour of the fruit was very good. Cabernet was harvested on 17th March at 13.4° Bé.
