2000
SHIRAZ (60%) CABERNET SAUVIGNON (40%) |
| Colour |
Deep rich red, dark
and opaque |
| Nose |
Shows the plummy and
spicy shiraz notes very distinctly, and these are enhanced by
the cassis-like aromas from the cabernet sauvignon. The gentle
charriness from the barrel aging adds a little extra complexity
and interest. |
| Palate |
The palate is rich and
full of flavour and shows most attractive development and softness,
even at this early stage. It shows both intensity and length.
Tannins are fine and elegant whilst still providing adequate
structure to the palate. The varietal flavours and the subtle
oak are all integrating very nicely. |
| Oak |
Predominantly French
- approximately 85% were brand new barriques and hogsheads. |
| Aging
Potential |
As with all the Cape
d'Estaing wines, this wine will continue to develop slowly and
gracefully. It will improve, as it gains more complexity, for
at least 5 years, and will go on for more than 10. |
| Growing
Season |
Spring was mild and
wet with November being the coolest on record. This affected
flowering and fruit set, producing a very low crop. Summer was
generally warm to hot and dry, apart from a couple of brief
rainy periods during February. The fruit was picked at 14°
baume on February 27. |
